The Pacific Dolphin's centerboard appears to be identical to the Yankee, meaning that the pin is actually in your bilge (cabin side) under some glass. This is different from O'Days (and maybe Lunns?) that had the pin buried externally in the keel. Definitely limits the exploratory surgery necessary.

See photos here:
http://www.dolphin24.org/images%20two/canopache%20cb%20trunk%20275x.jpg
And here:
http://www.dolphin24.org/images%20two/227%20cb%20bolt%201%20550x.jpg

-Tom, Yankee #186 "Sisu"

Edited by tcharpe - 15 Aug 2020 at 9:18pm

    Author: Mark from SD CA
Subject: Pacific Dolphin #264 Checking in
Posted: 14 Aug 2020 at 4:32pm

Hello Everyone,
I've spent the past few months cradling #264 to get her off of her trailer enough to access the bottom of the keel in order to open the glassed-in centerboard slot.
I have pictures of how I built the cradle to allow the trailer to be moved forward to expose the bottom of the keel. If anyone is interested in how I did it please let me know and I can send photos.
Now that the slot is open, I found that I do have a centerboard. It is jammed inside.
I have a few questions for anyone familiar with Pacific built boats.
1. What is the location of the centerboard pivot pin? (Please include measurements if you know them)
2. What type of ballast did Pacific use and can you confirm that it was internal ballast?
3. If it is internal ballast poured-in, do you know what it is comprised of?
4. Where is the ballast located fore and aft? It appears to extend as far aft as 8 - 10 inches before the end of the centerboard trunk which forms two narrow deep sumps on each side of the c-board enclosure. How far forward does the ballast go?
I ground off about 3/16" of paint, filler, and glass along the outside of the keel where the external pin is located on older boats (now I know that is not where the pin is) however, before grinding through the surface, I got water leaking out from inside the boat. Does anyone know if this area (10" aft from the front of the centerboard well) would be hollow or filled with ballast?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Mark from San Diego, Pacific Dolphin #264 - Sandpiper

I'm hoping to get her into the water in the next few weeks and had a quick centerboard question.

The board is binding in the trunk so that it cannot be fully raised. I'd like to remove the board to get to the root of the problem, and have found what looks like a pin in the bilge on the top of the trunk.

This "pin" is located under an aluminum plate screwed into the side of the top of the trunk, and is NOT a bolt. It's a flat circular disk about an inch in diameter with a hole in it.

Is anyone familiar with this arrangement, exactly what type of "pin" this is and how I might remove it to remove the board?

Many thanks!

Burke Johnson
Irvington, VA
